On Elders in Unitarianism

Terry Anderson

Late Update: Pre GA 2023

What is the best role for older adults in liberal religious organizations? Are they being used  effectively? Are they being ignored?  Are they only expected to serve as cheerleaders for younger congregational leaders?  Should they be merely tolerated when they get cranky or have ideas that challenge our personal or organizational activities and priorities?

This essay briefly describes the role of elders in various cultures and religions, and argues that elders have a great deal to contribute in terms of sustaining, growing and funding liberal religious culture and organizations.
