Genealogy of 7 Principles

Rev. Richard Trudeau

Late Update: Pre GA 2023

In the video below, produced shortly after the initial draft of the Article II proposal was published for feedback (Oct 2022), Rev Trudeau reviews the origins of the 7 Unitarian Universalist Principles going back the descriptive documents of Unitarians and Universalists, prior to the the merger of the two faiths in 1961. He includes a brief description of history of each original denomination’s self descriptions prior to 1959 when the two denominations finally started to arrange their nuptials.

Our current principles were the result of broad discussion, compromise, and evolution of our Denomination defining document: the bylaws of the Unitarian Universalist Association, which contains our Principles and Sources.

Richard’s script, which he mentions in this presentation, includes some background information at the end (that was not read) documenting his claims about the recent attacks on our principles, can be downloaded here.

Additional Information

The process that lead to the our current 7 principles began with the request from the UU Women’s Federation for a sexism audit in the UUA beginning in 1979. This triggered a 6 year process that was denomination wide and involved both the UUA leadership and many individual congregations. It was described in detail in the following UU World article published in May 2006: https://www.uuworld.org/articles/how-uu-principles-purposes-were-adopted
