Will Environmentalism Still Matter?

In 2023 at General Assembly, delegates voted to adopt an Amendment (52) to omit the sentence “We will work to repair harm and damaged relationships.” from the Interdependence/Covenant value. This sentence conflates environmental concerns with those of human relationships, devaluing the environment while lifting up human relationships that are already addressed in several statements throughout the revised Article II.

Even though Amendment 52 was adopted, this sentence was never omitted in the final proposal to be voted on in 2024. The value of delegate votes and the entire process is not being respected.

In this opinion piece, Heritage Unitarian Universalist Church member Rebecca Pace airs concerns regarding the currently proposed Interdependence Value as a part of Article II up for vote at the June 2024 General Assembly in light of the refusal to honor delegate votes on Amendment 52’s mandate.
